What is Regulation in Reach?

Our project is all about making sensory diets and strategies easier to use in everyday life. We want to understand what’s already working well for your family, what feels tricky, and how we can make sensory recommendations more practical and accessible.

By hearing directly from families, educators, and therapists, we hope to improve the way these strategies are shared and supported, so everyone feels more confident helping children regulate in the moments that matter most.

A quick guide to sensory diets and strategies

If these terms are new to you, here’s a simple overview.

  • Sensory diet: Just like a balanced food diet gives the body what it needs to function well, a sensory diet provides the right sensory activities and strategies to help your child feel calm, focused, and regulated throughout the day. It is a personalised plan based on your child’s individual sensory needs.
  • Sensory strategies: The small, everyday things that help your child self-regulate. This might be movement breaks, quiet time, fidget tools, deep pressure, or listening to music.

What works looks different for every child, and that’s okay. The goal is finding what helps your child feel safe, settled, and able to take on their day.

We’d love to hear from you

Your lived experience is incredibly valuable to this project. Whether you’re a parent, carer, educator, or therapist, your insights will help us understand what support is actually needed, and shape something more useful for the whole community.

There are no right or wrong answers. We’re simply curious about your experience — what’s been helpful, what’s felt hard, and what you wish you had more of.

You might like to reflect on:

  • How well do you understand sensory diets, and how confident do you feel using them?
  • What barriers have you run into when trying sensory strategies at home, school, or in the community?
  • What format would be most helpful for receiving sensory recommendations?
  • What’s already working well that you’d love to see more of?

Got a spare moment? Our short survey takes just a few minutes and makes a real difference to families at Learn for Life. Thank you so much for your time and support.
